As we are entering into the new year, we have an update from Father Festus' travels in Nigeria. Below is an email sent to our foundation from Father Festus:
"It's been 10 days since I arrived back in Nigeria. Although I am pleased to be back home, it is disheartening to see that the economic and security situations in Nigeria have not shown any signs of improvement. In fact, they have worsened. This observation is clearly demonstrated by the significant turnout at the two medical outreach events we organized. Prior to individuals convening for the occasions, we made necessary arrangements by procuring pharmaceuticals and provisions. As a result of economic circumstances, the cost of medication has significantly increased and access to affordable food has become increasingly difficult for the average individual.
The initial medical outreach event successfully served a total of 707 individuals, including children. The majority of individuals who arrived exhibited symptoms of malaria and high blood pressure. Others arrived with various health concerns, such as hypertension, cholera, and malnutrition.
Similar to our initial contact a few days ago, the second contact resulted in a larger turnout than expected. This time, we were heartened by the abundance of children seeking medical treatment and food. As evident from the pictures and videos, the children were overjoyed to have the chance to receive medical aid and satisfy their hunger.
Due to the positive outcome of the previous fibroid treatment, a group of seven women reached out seeking support for their fibroid surgeries. Several women have been living with this condition for three to five years, unable to seek medical attention due to financial constraints. I have agreed to provide assistance for three, depending on the cost of each. If it is feasible to financially reach out to all of them, I will make every effort to do so. Next week, I will be visiting hospitals to facilitate the release of patients who are being held against their will. I will have my cameraman accompany me to certain locations, as long as they adhere to the institution's policies.
Through these experiences, I can see the impact I have on reaching out to individuals and preventing potential tragedies. Let's keep these individuals in our thoughts as they navigate through uncertain times, unsure of what lies ahead. As mentioned earlier, I'm doing well apart from feeling a bit tired due to the hot weather. Wishing you the best as we pray for each other.
Blessings!
Fr. Festus Ejimadu"
